photographing weddings

Bridal Party Poses

I survived photographing two weddings this month! I had the opportunity to second shoot a wedding in Alexandria a few weeks ago and absolutely loved the classic feel. Then, I photographed an outdoor wedding at a fruit farm in Berryville, Virginia over the weekend. It was a rainy and chilly day, but luckily the rain let up just in time and the clouds made for some wonderful shots. It’s crazy how lighting can give photos a totally different feel. Here’s a peek at some of the images. And the rustic/country wedding: What have you guys been up to lately?

recent photography sessions

Portrait Photographer

I figured I’d share some of my favorite pictures from recent photography sessions since I’ve been so MIA lately. Not only has business been picking up finally since moving to this area, but I’ve been able to double my lens collection with photo shoot funds. If you’re into photography, you know how exciting that is. Especially since I was able to pick up a macro lens before the weddings I’ll be shooting this month. Creative ring shots? Check. It’s like Christmas in September/October! I also invested in a larger camera bag for all of my wedding gear. This Epiphanie Brooklyn Bag will carry most of my lenses and my speed light, and then I’ll keep my ONA Bowery Camera Bag for travel. The Brooklyn Bag is really massive so when I leave on Saturday for Alexandria, it’ll look like I’m heading off to my first day of school. I’ll make sure Brandon snaps […]

photography session in dc

Photography Session DC Capitol

After we moved abroad for my husband’s job, we had every intention of coming back to the DC area. I started my career on Capitol Hill, my first “real” apartment was located on the trusty red line, Brandon drunkenly confessed his undying love to me after meeting at a bar in Dupont Circle, and we made many other memories here. Plus… the monuments are a good enough reason to live in this area. Have I ever mentioned my obsession with the Capitol building? I used to get lost in those tunnels, yo. And not because I was exploring… I was legit lost trying to find the flag office as an intern. Anyway… The Capitol Building and Lincoln Memorial took this photography session to another level. It also helped that Christa and M.V. are a completely adorable and sentimental couple. Christa brought her wedding shoes to this shoot and M.V. had his wedding socks, bow tie, […]

lifestyle baby photos

Newborn Photography

It’s kind of funny. When I was bored and we were moving around every six months, I posted on this blog every day and felt completely caught up with everything blogging-related. Now that we’ve settled in Northern Virginia and I’m actually growing my photography business, I feel like the shittiest blogger ever. I’ve temporarily suspended sidebar ads, I’ve been ignoring emails regarding sponsored posts from random companies, and I just don’t have anything to say. I’m sure this will change when we go to NYC, Panama, and Peru and I feel the need to share a million travel photos and sightseeing tips, but for now, my posts will probably be a bit sporadic. But here are some cute baby photos to make it up to you. Although I really like posed photos involving buckets, hats, and faux fur, there’s something about lifestyle baby photos… they’re so sweet and natural. And […]

family photographer in reston

Family Photographer in Reston

A few nights ago, I photographed a lovely couple and their dog at their home in Northern Virgina. They’re moving to Texas soon and wanted to find a family photographer in Reston to remember their neighborhood and the golf course they live on. Such a sweet idea! This was an easy photoshoot because the area was completely gorgeous and had lots mature trees and stunning views, and their dog Ranger was calm and cute. The last time Brandon and I had family photos done (in Florida), our dogs wouldn’t look at the photographer and tried to bolt after small animals every chance they got, but Ranger was a trooper and ended up being very photogenic. I even had the chance to take some portraits of just him and they ended up being some of my favorites. Yay for sweet pups! (Malcolm and Ollie… please take lessons from Ranger). If you need your own […]

what i’ve been up to | newborn photography

Newborn Photography

I’m usually fairly regular when it comes to posting on my blog, but this week I’ve been working on everything photography-related and my little website has been placed on the back burner. I’ve quickly realized that a lot goes into owning your own business so kudos to all the ladies and guys out there making stuff happen. It’s hard! I was contacted by a wonderful family wanting photos of their 3 month old son and I happily obliged. This was my first baby photoshoot ever so naturally I was a bit nervous and worried the baby would absolutely despise me, but everything went well and I’m happy with how natural the photos look. I never want my photos to look uncomfortably staged so this was super important to me. Anyway, here’s a little peek at what I’ve been up to lately. I have a feeling newborn photography is going to […]

photography website redesign | voyage photography studio, llc

Does anyone else have issues focusing on their blog when the weather improves? I enjoyed writing in the warmth of our Boston apartment since the ground was usually covered in a foot of snow, but now that spring weather is finally upon us, I want to frolic around the yard and plant flowers… and avoid the ginormous mutant bumble bees that seem to stalk my every move. Those are no fun. With the nice weather comes spring cleaning and running lots of errands, and I’m happy to report that my photography business is official. Official as in I just received a bunch of paperwork from the State of Virginia that I don’t quite understand yet — But Voyage Photography Studio, LLC is alive and well! And thanks to Amanda, I have a new website design to go along with this great news. I’m completely obsessed with triangles right now (please see my mousepad […]

shelby | senior photo session

My sister wanted a few more senior photos (in addition to the ones she had taken last fall), so we decided to find a brick wall and a field while I was in town. Because that’s what you do when you’re in Iowa… find a cornfield or something. I have to say, the field photos might be my favorite out of the entire senior photo session! I love her bright red scarf and lipstick against the pops of yellow in the background. Which photograph is your favorite?

colleen | portrait mini session in boston

Before we left Boston, I had a portrait mini session with Colleen of Sophie’s Talking Sports and let me tell you, she’s one photogenic lady! After attempting to take photographs in the very busy Boston Public Library, we made our way to Beacon Hill — because everyone loves quaint streets and brick buildings with lots of character. If you would like to schedule your own blogger mini session, I’m now in the Northern Virginia area. :)

Caroline is in the process of completely rebranding her blog. Since she’ll have a shiny, new website design at the end of this month, she wanted some portraits taken, too. Everyone needs pretty photographs for their blog, right? We decided to snap photos in Beacon Hill and Boston Common — two of my all-time favorite areas in Boston! Isn’t she gorgeous? If you need photographs for your own website, I’m now offering blogger mini sessions! I’d love to work with you.
