mornings like these

Mornings have quickly become my favorite time of the day. As soon as the iPhone alarm sounds for my husband and he slowly makes his way to the shower, Ollie peeks his head out from under the duvet and takes Brandon’s place on the pillow. I rub his belly and he stares into my eyes, almost thanking me again for giving him a better life. When Malcolm finally realizes there’s more room for him to stretch out, he leaves his “big boy” dog bed and scratches the bed sheets until I let him up. We say goodbye to Brandon and spend another hour cuddling and checking emails. The morning is filled with snuggles, dog treats, coffee and the news, and when I sit down at my computer to write, Ollie sneaks into our bedroom and puts himself to bed for a quick morning nap. It doesn’t matter if there’s a […]

gift guide | for your dog

Hi, I’m Rachel and I’m completely smitten with my dogs. So much so that I’m going to hand it over to Malcolm and Ollie for this gift guide. They’ve compiled a list of some of their favorite toys, treats, and accessories for the furry friend in your life. Malcolm’s Picks: 1. BarkBox Subscription – My parents gifted us a BarkBox subscription and even though Ollie hogs all of the toys and treats,  I still look forward to it every month. Follow this link to receive $10 off your first month. I promise your pups will love it! 2. Organic Plush Toys – Mum has been on this organic kick lately, but that’s fine by me because I get new toys. And yes, I’m allowed to say “mum” because I’m originally from Scotland. 3. Bocce’s Truffle Mac & Cheese Biscuits – You could say these treats are addictive. 4. Orbee-Tuff Raspberry […]

the expat diaries | tips for moving a pet abroad

Welcome to another installment of The Expat Diaries, a place to share expat stories, adventures and travel tips with others! Link up your posts and be sure to visit a few bloggers. For those of you who are new, this blog hop takes place on the first Thursday of each month. The next link-up is scheduled on October 3rd. Today I’m going to be discussing tips for moving a pet abroad. Most of you already know that we got our beloved Westie, Malcolm in Scotland and moved him to the United States after our year abroad. I often get questions about our two dogs and what we’ll do with them if we take another assignment out of the country, and the answer is: we’ll take them with us. Yes, the experience can be stressful for all parties involved (although I really believe it was more stressful for me than it was for Malcolm […]

Duh 3// Helping us pack for Boston 4// Essie “mint candy apple” is my new shade We officially have our new address in Boston and the movers are coming on Monday. I’ve packed four ginormous suitcases and now comes the tedious task of packing up all of our appliances and miscellaneous kitchen items. If you want to learn how to pack like a boss, start by keeping every single box your stuff comes in. We have boxes from our blender, tea kettle, glasses, spice tins – everything! It’s so much easier that way. Just be sure to designate a closet in your apartment/house to store all of these stupid boxes. What have you been up to lately? life’s little moments

Instead of posting Instagram photos today, here are a few videos of Malcolm as a puppy because 1// I didn’t take many photos this week, 2// It’s Malcolm 2nd birthday! I’m glad this little man has been my sidekick these past couple of years. Yes, we record videos of our dogs. Cute, furry puppy butts and little barks should always be documented. And don’t forget about his “Postcards from Malcolm” series on the blog. ********** Rainstorms and Love Notes Why did you start blogging?I wanted a way to document my life as a newlywed, to help keep track of the memories my husband and I are making together. 1// My fancy new camera bag 2// Malcolm sunbathing near the pool 3// Ollie giving me the death glare because I forced him to surf 4// We slept with four dogs in our bed My life has been consumed with dogs and an ONA camera bag I can’t stop hugging. It might be the best purchase I’ve ever made because the size is perfect and the leather is soft but sturdy. My last camera bag was made out of chevron fabric and stained really easily so it was basically a waste of money. Where am I going with this? Well, if you need a new bag, I’m recommending ONA to you. Isn’t it pretty? Other than that, we’ve been preparing for our move to Boston. Finding an apartment and scheduling movers every six months is a lot of fun…  What have you been up to lately? family photos in florida

I hope everyone had a safe and fun Fourth of July! I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to relax and catch up on emails this weekend. While I’m on a plane headed to the Midwest, here are a few photos from our family session last week. Even though it had rained all day and the ground was muddy, our photographer worked with us to get lots of shots we love. At one point Malcolm and Ollie were trying to track down squirrels to kill so she got down in the wet grass and started barking like a dog to distract them. I’m honestly surprised she was that patient with them. What a gem! We must train our dogs to act appropriately in front of the camera if they’re going to be doggie models someday…. Yes, I had her take photos for my blog. Feel free to judge. ;)

postcards from malcolm | my brother from another mother

Hiya, Postcards from Rachel readers! My mum finally asked me to guest post on her blog once again and I must say, quite a few things have changed since my last appearance. If you missed my first post back in February — well, that’s absolutely dreadful, really — but I won’t hold it against you. You can find part 1 here… but make it snappy. I have a lot to say. After five dogs came into my life only to disappear (fostering was difficult for me), my parents decided to adopt a mutt named Ollie. Mum found him in one of the shelters in Arizona and nearly missed him because he was tucked away in a corner cage with a big German Shepherd. Mum fell in love — blah, blah, blah — and decided to talk my father into getting a second pup. Ollie charmed father (only because he flops […]

rover boutique bow tie collar review

Disclosure: I was sent this product to review on my blog. All opinions expressed are my own. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ve probably realized that my dogs are spoiled. I adore Malcolm and Ollie, treat them like my children, and would rather buy them toys and treats than go shopping for myself – well, unless LOFT is having a sale. Anyway… as soon as I found The Rover Boutique, I fell in love with their dapper bow tie collars and doggie peacoats. Everything in the online shop is handmade and durable and as soon as I received my bow tie collars, I could tell they were high quality items. Malcolm and Ollie didn’t mind wearing their collars around the beach and dog park, and I felt confident that my little terrors boys wouldn’t break loose because of the quality of the materials. I chose the blue sailboat bow tie […]

barkbox review may 2013

barkbox-review

Since I have two dogs that I love more than anything, and sometimes foster dogs from local shelters, I’m always looking for new products to keep my fur children happy, healthy and busy. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up my May BarkBox because it was jam-packed with healthy treats, bullies and a Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff toy they’ve been playing with every single day (seriously, they fight over it so I’m ordering a couple more). As soon as Malcolm and Ollie realized the box was for them, they started pulling everything out. I really tried to take a photo of the open box in its entirety, but when your dogs are excited, you don’t want to ruin the mood. You guys, Ollie throws tantrums… I wasn’t going to mess with him. Signing up for BarBox was a breeze. Their website is easy to navigate and you select the type […]

Question. Why does HGTV make everything seem so easy? I wasn’t even doing heavy lifting and my entire body hurts. I am basically a professional painter so I bet my vigorous painting movements strained a couple of muscles. At least the walls look damn good. I painted my nails today even though they’ll get ruined the next time we work on the house. Last night I came home with paint on […]

life’s little moments

First of all, I’d like to thank everyone for their sweet comments on yesterday’s post. I made myself write it in about ten minutes and hit publish before I could change my mind. I had intense butterflies at first, but feel better already. Something about really putting yourself out there is unnerving… but I’m happy I did. And even though others might not agree with me sharing my life on the Internet, I want my blog to be as real as can be. Who knows? Maybe I’ll help someone else along the way.1// Driving in Florida — my favorite type of day2// Malcolm being sweet3// Nail polish and studs4// In the middle of Ollie’s temper tantrumLately I’ve been trying to decrease my social media usage {mainly Instagram and Twitter} and so far it’s been a breath of fresh air. morning stretches

Weekend mornings are my favorite because we’re allowed to take it easy and relax. The sunshine pours through our bedroom blinds, the dogs stir and begin to stretch, and we lie there… enjoying the moment. Usually one of the dogs disturbs our moment of peace {Ollie, I’m talking about you}, but on this particular morning they were gems. How was your weekend?

Ollie has a temper like I’ve never seen before and throws a legitimate tantrum if he doesn’t get enough attention. This usually involves collapsing on the floor, rolling on his back and shrieking while squirming around. Our neighbors probably think we beat our pets. Anyway, then when we do pet him, he tinkles. It’s great, really.Malcolm is as gentle as ever — until he gets excited and tries to nip our faces. He’s never actually bit us before but he does this Westie air nibble that’s cute […]

life’s little moments

This weekend wasn’t the best. Mainly because Malcolm got into trouble yet again. Even though he’s only a year and a half, Malcolm has experienced more things than most. Bad things, unfortunately. While we were living in Scotland and hanging out on a beach near the North Sea, he decided to lick a jellyfish. It caused a horrible allergic reaction and he was foaming from the mouth, lethargic, confused and basically unable to move. I was almost positive he would die but luckily we got him to the emergency vet in time. While we were living in Arizona, he gobbled up a fajita with onions. Again, I was afraid for his life, but we made it to the emergency vet and he was given fluids and medication. However…This time Malcolm experienced a snake bite. I was walking both of the dogs alone because B was on a call for his MBA program, and it […]

why i foster dogs

I’ve mentioned past foster dogs here, here and here, but decided to write this post after questions from readers. A lot of you have asked me why and how I started fostering dogs when I moved to Arizona. Well, it was because of a Facebook page I stumbled across when we first moved there. I remember lying in bed, searching Facebook for Arizona rescue pages because we were considering adding a second dog to our family. Instead of finding an actual nonprofit rescue group, I found the ‘Friends of Arizona’s Shelter Animals’ page. I was disturbed by how many dogs were on the euthanasia lists for the next morning, and learned that both county shelters euthanized many unwanted animals every day at 5 am. Right then I knew that I wanted to help in some way. While I was scrolling through photos of dogs that were scheduled to be killed, […]

life’s little moments

I’m going to keep this short and sweet because this weekend we have been up to our necks in ticks. I’ve turned into an expert tick remover overnight (can I put that on a resume when my housewife stint is over?), and if I never see another bloody, bloated, disgusting tick in my life, I’ll be a happy girl. Have you ever removed a burrowed tick with your favorite Avon eyebrow tweezers? It’s not a pretty sight. Making sure you get the head completely out is a bitch and it’s even more disturbing when the tick has a piece of your new dog’s flesh in its mouth, as if its taking away a souvenir from its short-lived stay. We’ve fostered dogs who have been in sad shape before so I was expecting maybe one tick, but not three massive ones that look like they’re about to explode from blood consumption. […]

high five for friday

Today I’m linking up with Lauren for High Five for Friday because my husband’s home early from work, and I’m feeling cheerful. Anyone else excited to start the weekend? We are about to leave for lunch in downtown Scottsdale and the Brat Haus is on the menu. Yay, German sausages! 1. I won The Blue Eyed Owl’s giveaway which means I’m going to the REVIVE Bloggers Conference in Phoenix! I’ve been doing a little research and the list of speakers is phenomenal. Whippy Cake, A Night Owl, and Ashley from The Shine Project all in the same room? Um, yes please. I can’t wait.2. Our foster dogs have been really good since their snip on Wednesday. You would think they’d be depressed about losing their manhood, but they’ve calmed down and they’re not marking up our furniture. This is great because I no longer want to throw them out onto the streets. I’m kidding. I’d never do that. But it […]
