our time in cusco, peru

Since our trip to Peru in October, it feels like I’ve been hopping from state to state and haven’t had much time to go through photos and share vacation details. I finally started editing photos last night and have loved reliving everything my husband and I experienced in South America. I definitely consider this adventure one of our favorite trips of all time.

Here are a few photos from our time in Cusco.

Cusco, Peru

When we weren’t taking tours through the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, we spent most of our time wandering around Cusco. It took a couple of days to get adjusted to the high altitude and even when I was doing better it still felt as if a bowling ball was constantly resting on my chest, so eating a ton of food and staying well-hydrated was important. I was totally fine with that. Peruvian cuisine is hands down the best I’ve ever had so it was fun trying local restaurants. On one of the days we were both struggling with shortness of breath, we even found a chocolate museum with make-your-own hot chocolate. Yes!

We also fed Peruvian street dogs chicken nuggets and I carried around a large bottle of hand sanitizer for the sole purpose of being able to clean my hands after cuddling them all. My mom kept texting me reminders not to touch any of the stray dogs because she was worried about rabies and knows me so well, but they were sweet and sad and I couldn’t help it.

I woke up at 3 am one morning because I heard a dog yelping in the middle of the street, and then on one of our tours, I watched a car hit a terrier (we have two terriers). Let’s just say the stray dog situation is intense… and you’ll cry. But we will adopt a Peruvian pup eventually.

On one of the days the power went out, we ran into some sort of event or holiday going on in the city and it was fun to see people dressed up in different garb. We still have no clue what it was even after asking multiple people, but that’s ok. It was a unique experience nonetheless.

My coaches have told me that it is common for athletes to train at higher altitudes so that they can learn how to control their breathing, which is especially helpful for competitive swimmers like myself. Ahh I would really love to visit the hot chocolate place! You can find a little bit of Christmas everywhere I guess :) Anyways, happy holidays! I wish you the most adventurous of years :) -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

I feel like I would be the exact same when it comes to the poor pups; I mean, how could you not? That sounds so freaking sad. Well, other than that, I’m glad you had a great time babe! xx

These photos are making me nostalgic of the time I was lived in Cusco for 2 months. I haven’t posted all of my photos on my blog yet, every time I start to edit I get distracted by the wonderful memories I’ve made. San Blas, Plaza de Armas and San Pedro and that little alley by Starbucks are among my favorite places. The choco museum didn’t have hot choco making classes before, just the regular chocolate making. Cusco Is so much more beautiful after you’ve gone hiking Machu Picchu and adapted to altitude sickness. I’m glad you get to experience it. Happy New Year!

I love the pops of blue in your photos. Like you, stray dogs always break my heart! I really want to go to Peru, but if I’m being perfectly honest the thought of altitude sickness has deterred me. I have a slight bit of asthma to begin with so thinking about having shortness of breath brings anxiety!

The worst was when I’d fall asleep… I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. That was the only time I was nervous about the altitude, but it was hard getting used to!

Looks incredible! Definitely will have to add it to my list of places I have to see <3

You make this place look so gorgeous, quaint, and magical! I especially love that first photo of the VW bugs on the cobblestone street (juxtaposing the old with the super old). It looks like they use a lot of blue there too! Wish I can visit soon!

Hi Rachel! I very much enjoy your posts, particularly the lovely pictures! I’ve never been to Peru, but have always wanted to visit. I haven’t gotten further than Mexico as far as Latin America is concerned.

I mentioned you in my post “My Favourite Travel Blogs” over at http://www.anamericanintheuk.com. :)
