Random Thoughts and Confessions

+ Last night I had a nightmare about making a serious grammatical error on my blog. Let’s be serious, this website is one big grammatical error, but for some reason I was shaking and crying in my dream. Apparently I was upset? Okay then.

+ Advertising a photography business is time-consuming and frankly, it blows. I keep thinking about how easy it would be to promote myself back in my home state since I have friends and family there, and in Virginia it’s the complete opposite. Be my friend?

+ Speaking of advertisement… I’m considering getting rid of all Postcards from Rachel advertisement options so I can focus on this little blog of mine. Have any of you made a similar decision before?

+ I’m trying really hard to get back to blogging for myself (hence ridding my site of advertisement options), but I just realized that I’ve gone back and forth regarding blogging for almost a year and that’s probably not a good sign. Do you always enjoy your blog?

+ It’s inevitable. Once you’re settled down in your forever home, you will develop the travel bug again. Needless to say, we’ve been looking at flights to Nicaragua.

+ My 18-year-old sister will be spending a month with us in July and my husband is scared. We’re super weird together and nighttime usually means lots of giggling and pulling pranks on Brandon. May he have the strength to endure our strange antics.

+ Did you know that Seoul has the most Starbucks in the world and that landing a flight attendant job is more difficult than getting into Harvard (supposedly)? Now you do.

+ Sometimes I feel like I don’t have my life figured out at all. We always hope that we’ll have the answers to everything as we get older, but I seem to get more confused with age. Perfect.

+ I have a list of travel bloggers I want to visit this year and I’m going to make it happen somehow. Huzzah!

I’ve got to say, once I took off sponsorship options off my blog is was so freeing! Now that I’ve got my footing again in a new directions after a few months without them, I’m ready to start up again with a few sponsorship options and it was the best decision I could have made!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

So glad it worked for you! I’ll probably do the same… or at least only offer 2 ads per month. Maybe that would help.

      • http://www.truecoloursblog.com Casey

Yea totally. I think cutting the options back really helps!

advertising is hard in general but I can’t even imagine how hard it is now!and i have dreams about blogging (not grammar but we know I mess up on that!)

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has dreams (nightmares) about blogging. ;)

  • http://www.thingsiamcrazyfor.com/ Camila

Oh I feel kind of the same, the older I get the more I’m sure of what I want, but less sure of how I will achieve it…

Making grammatical errors is a serious cause of concern!! After I publish a post I always re-read it 1-2 times even though I’ve been checking for errors throughout drafting the post :P // I don’t always enjoy my blog. Sometimes I just leave it open and stare at it and try to pinpoint what I don’t like about it, and then I try to fix it, although sometimes it takes awhile for me to get to that point. // I think the only time I’ve felt like I had my life all figured out was in elementary school where I wanted to be the first woman president… // http://brunchataudreys.tumblr.com

I don’t always like my blog. I’m pondering coming back from a break myself. I’m kind of enjoying this hibernation that I am in though.

  • The London Turtle

Haha I know what you mean about weird sister moments, we’re the same :)

  • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

oh man, it is like you’re reading my mind about blogging. I just cut two ad spots from my blog because I’ve been having trouble with blogging lately.

But at the end of the day, I’m so glad to have the outlet.

    • http://treasuretromp.com/ Nicole @ Treasure Tromp

ps, you better make a trip out to CA ;)

  • http://akhayley.blogspot.com/ Ashley Hayley

One of my best friends just got a job as a flight attendant with Alaska. I think it really has more to do with your personality and if you can be super friendly and bubbly all the time (like she is). I could never pull that off.

  • http://amovingstory.com/ kim @ AmovingStory

I hope that pulling pranks on your husband is the subject of future content!!

  • http://bluehairinbelgium.blogspot.be/ Kerri Heritage

I think they lie when they tell you that everything will be figured out. I’m just fumbling my way through life and as long as I’m having some fun, I’m ok with that.

I agree, I don’t always enjoy my blog so I stop blogging for a bit. Usually I’ve been having enough fin though that I have some posts ready to go, so hopefully no one notices. I usually get myself bogged down with trying to participate in the blogging community and work my job and everything else adulthood requires (like painting my nails haha).

Your third to the last one has me flummoxed… Seoul has the most Starbucks?! That’s nuts isn’t it?! If it was NYC, or like, LA, then I’d get it, but Seoul! That’s a really interesting factoid.
I’ve hear that about flight attendants and Harvard before… absolutely bizarre!

  • http://naomihattaway.com/ Naomi Hattaway

You can totally photograph our family when we move up there and I’ll help you promote your photography business! I’m flying up tomorrow to house hunt (huzzah! and egads!) (On the other topic, I think you should strongly consider writing and blogging for yourself, i.e. scrap the advertising, but that’s just me .. you’ve got to do what’s right for you (but then none of us ever seem to know what that is!)

  • http://jennafinch.blogspot.com/ Jenna

I’m also at a place where I just don’t have the energy that I wish I had to invest in my blog… let alone manage advertising options. I don’t know how you do it all so well! I this most of us would totally understand if you needed a break from sponsorships. Oh, and I hope I’m one of the travel bloggers on your list. Any plans to visit South Africa? :)

  • Sonya Matveeva

Haha, sometimes I can’t stop but think some weird things. Actually recently I’ve been thinking about advertising myself. I just moved to the US from Russia and back at home I didn’t need to advertise really as I knew lots of people and that’s how I got started, and here nobody really knows me yet. Maybe going out and making friends on the streets? :) I don’t know.. I got married so my only acquaintances now are my husbands family. And you should definitely put on your travel list my address- Oregon is amazing!

I get the travel bug after sitting still for like, two weeks. You can always come hang out with me down here in Costa Rica :)

  • Jessa Olson

I wonder those same things some times. That is so awesome that your sister is coming to visit. I know the feeling about visiting bloggers b/c now that I am on the East Coast everyone is close by. We should get together sometime.

  • http://becomingadorrable.com/ Becca Dorr

I don’t think that nightmare is so crazy. I mean, if you made a serious typo when typing “i love peonies” it could be pretty bad.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

If I made a serious typo like that, I would laugh so hard I’d probably cry. Hahahahahaha!

  • thediynurse

I totally get what you mean with the blog. I’m selling my home in VA and leaving behind the whole DIY thing to travel for several years before settling down out of the country [or so thats the plan]. I have no idea how to transition smoothly or at all. I want to maintain the blog I have now because I love it and I’m just now starting to get recognition from the big guns. But I do know that if you dont do it for YOURSELF first, its not worth it and youll burn out.

I live in Winchester. Is there anything specifically I can do to help your business photography? Maybe a badge on my blog?? Let me know!

  • http://www.deletingtheadjectives.com/ Rachel Brandt Fisher

I could have written this post myself. No I don’t always love my blog but…I do always come back to it and that seems to be a good reason to keep writing it. I’m trying to flush out my travel section. Any tips?

  • http://lostintravelsblog.com/ Chelsea @ Lost in Travels

oh seoul, how i love your coffee addiction : ) and i taught a student that wanted to be a flight attendant but she told me that she was told she wasn’t skinny or pretty enough. my heart just ached for her! and come visit me : ) that’s why we have a pull out couch…duh

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

That is the saddest thing I have ever heard! I was reading about foreign carriers and how strict they can be… you basically have to look like a model to get a FA job. Eek.

      Yay pull out couches! :)

  • http://gina-alyse.blogspot.com/ Gina Alyse

I go back and forth on whether I enjoy my blog or whether I’m inspired to write or post. I think it’s worth it for the times that you are really inspired and for the posts that truly show who you are or share an important message. And haha about the grammar dream–so funny! I haven’t had a dream like that in awhile (or many dreams in a while, in fact) but it sounds like a dream I would have! I hope you have a good rest of the week and good luck with making travel blogger visits! :)

I’ve been feeling blah with blogging lately too so I know how you feel. I’m also thinking of cutting back on sponsors too but not fully decided yet. So we’ll see!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Hopefully cutting back on sponsors will help us both!

  • http://www.iris-hanlin.com/ A Country Girl’s Daybook

I did not know that about flight attendants… Now I do! I’ve considered that job multiple times.

I have also. I was actually searching for FA jobs a few months ago and no one is hiring. Such a tough job to get.

  • Nico Vermeulen

I liked reading your thoughts. I’m quite new with this blogging thing and really thought about starting to get some sponsors, but seems like it’s weighing you down? Hope you get back to the heart of you blog. :)

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

I think it’s OK if you start out small. Once it becomes really time-consuming, it’s no fun. :)

    California awaits you! Bahahaha.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

I cannot wait till my siblings are a little older and can come stay with me in the summer!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

How old are they? I’m so ridiculously excited!

      • http://hemborgwife.wordpress.com/ Bailie @ The Hemborg Wife

They just turned 13 and 15 in May but my mom is still weary of two teenage boys on an international flight alone!

  • http://www.lifeplus1.me/ Lifeplus1

I enjoyed this post. Short, sweet and completely honest. ;o)

I honestly don’t know how you find the time to blog for yourself and run ads as well. I can hardly find the time to post 3-5x per week! Now that I’ve got Little Man in school for half days I’m looking to start doing some blog/web design. But even that scares me.

Have you thought about taking a vacation from your blog?

If I didn’t have sponsors, I’d definitely take a vacation from my blog. :)

  • http://agirlandhertravels.com/ Polly

Come to Nicaragua! It’s awesome (but not as cheap as you might think…)

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

      I want to so badly!

  • Yvonne Rhinehart

    1. The blog definitely is work sometimes. Of course all writers hit slumps. You’ll get past that.
    2. The travel bug is huge. I hope you book a trip.
    3. It’ll be okay if you’re weird together. My fiance and I always are and most find it endearing or play along.

  • http://www.toothbrushtravels.com/ Amy @ ToothbrushTravels

I don’t think you’ll ever have it all figured out babe, and that’s a good thing, because can you imagine how boring life would be if you did? With regards to pulling ads, pulling them for a bit might help you regain some time and energy. Running a photography business and a blogging business must be exhausting for you. Do what’s right for you. You can always go back to it if you want too. Sometimes it’s nice to take a break xx
