21 things learned in 21 years

21 things learned in 21 years

I’d like to pretend that I’m a wise individual since I’m nearing thirty years of age, but the truth is, I still do a lot of stupid stuff. Nonetheless, in honor of my birthday weekend and turning old(er), here’s 21 things learned in 21 years. Because I stopped counting at 21. And also because everyone needs unwarranted advice from a complete stranger.

1. If it scares the crap outta you, it’s probably worth pursuing. Unless this is a person we’re talking about. Then you should run.

2. Anything is possible with a clean house.

3. Life experiences are more valuable than material possessions.

4. Creeping on WebMD always leads to a cancer diagnosis. Avoid at all costs.

5. Wait for pizza to cool before taking a big bite. A burnt mouth is nothing to mess with.

6. A lousy day can be turned around with puppy snuggles and a hot mug of tea.

7. Get rid of the negativity in your life and you’ll instantly feel lighter.

8. Groom your pets often to avoid bum nuggets. They’re the worst.

9. You’re the only person in control of your happiness. Choose to be happy.

10. Once a procrastinator, always a procrastinator. You may think you’ll be able to magically kick this annoying habit sometime in adulthood, but nope. It’ll always be there.

11. People from all around the world aren’t as different as they’re made out to be on the news.

12. Some of us need more sleep than others to function in life. *raises hand*

13. Adult acne is real.

14. Treat your siblings with kindness early on in life and they’ll become your best friends.

15. Time is your most precious resource… don’t waste it.

16. To a certain extent no one knows what they’re doing…

17. Except your parents. Parents are always right. Always!

18. Luck is more about effort than chance.

19. Dog feet smell like hay and Fritos. The scent is surprisingly relaxing.

20. Marry your best friend. If you don’t feel comfortable hanging out in sweatpants (and probably braless) with your spouse… well, that sucks.

21. Being able to laugh at yourself is a wonderful gift.

What have you learned as you’ve gotten older (and wiser)?

This is the most beautiful blog post i’ve ever seen.

I am currently struggling with the second lesson learned; cleaning my house, haha.

Thank you for this, Vickie x

Aww, thank you! And cleaning my house is always a struggle… but I love when it’s spotless!

I’ve learned to live where I live: enjoying the moment as I’m in it and not thinking about being somewhere else.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

That’s such a great lesson! I’m still working on that one.

You’ve learned a solid 21 lessons. :) Groomed puppy snuggles/paws/kisses are the BEST, and a marriage to anyone less than your best friend wouldn’t be near as awesome.

I obviously haven’t learned NOT to burn my mouth on pizza yet… did that on Wednesday.

We had pizza last night and although I was extremely HANGRY, I made myself wait until it cooled. ;)

So good – I love using birthdays as a time to reflect. It’s a rewarding task, sometimes difficult but ultimately very fulfilling.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

      I think so, too!

  • Amber Marie

Good stuff! My bday is coming up, too. Maybe I will come up with a list, too!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Happy early birthday, Amber. You definitely should make a list! It’s pretty fun. :)

No.5, wise, wise advice. I bit into a bean and cheese taco the other day before letting it cool and I’ve been paying for it with a very sore mouth every since.
    P. S. This post made my day :)

Don’t you hate when it feels like the roof of your mouth is peeling?! I hate that!

      WebMD is the devil.

Good advice! Love 1, 3, 7, 9, 15 and 18. And yeah, procrastination is something impossible to get rid of.

    Enjoy your birthday weekend x

      Thanks, Irene! :)

These are wonderful, I love the last two so very true!

      Thanks! Glad you enjoyed them.

  • Meg

I totally agree with #2, #5, #10, and #20 . I may have to smell my dog’s feet when I get home to truly understand the frito smell.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Hahaha. Definitely smell them and let me know what you think. ;)

Ugh, the negativity one is so true! Don’t keep those people (or objects…or thoughts!) around, and you’ll feel so much better!

  • Krystal R.

#1 and #15 are everything! I love this list!

  • Brianna

Awh I love this! I love #9. Such a good reminder. Oh, and the pizza one! ;)

  • Kayla Magness

This is too good, and so true! Love it! Especially love the one about getting rid of the negativity in life!

  • Leah Symonne

I loved this! I definitely feel kind of heartbroken about the procrastinating one though, I was hoping as an adult I’d be less of a time waster!

Pizza burn is the WORST, especially if it hits the roof of your mouth! The other lessons are all true, as well – great list!

  • http://www.prettymayhem.com/ Pearl – Pretty Mayhem

This list made me laugh because so many things rang true for me too! It’s good to know I’m not the only pizza loving-procrastinating-over sleeper around :)

  • http://thefardenjournals.blogspot.com/ Arden Rosenthal

    I love #1 and #7

  • http://www.gutenblogyall.com/ Margo

“… well, that sucks” haha – that’s a fair statement. I’m getting married in a little over a month and can’t imagine life around the house if I were confined to jeans.

  • Gina Bares

    Love this! All true!

  • http://ademasnopuedonadar.com/ Barbara

I have learned the internet always leads to a cancer diagnosis (just like you), that sometimes no matter how much I try, I’m unable to control everything – once you accept this, you live happier & that you shouldn’t care about what other people think of you and just live your life!

  • Lisa

    Love this :)

  • http://www.christielikespink.com Christie Parrish

This is a great list!!I agree with all of it! :p But I especially agree with #2 #6 & #12

  • http://jurgandhall.blogspot.com.au/ Casey Jurgens

You think pizza mouth burn is bad? Obviously never experience the pain of meat pies. Or jam donuts. Damn those jam donuts!!!

  • coki

I discovered you thanks to Bloglovin.
To me it is Monday morning and your list was the best to start the week!
    I will only add:
#22 Stop worrying about anything, because you just have to live (and enjoy) minute by minute.

I love these things. Thanks for sharing your wisdom!

Loved this post! I’ve stolen your idea (I hope that’s ok – I linked to you in the post!) except mine is 26 things, because I’m turning 26 tomorrow (argh!) If you’re interested you can see it here – http://www.beinglittle.co.uk/2014/05/26-things-learned-in-26-years.html xx
