Here are some recent snapshots of the new house and of course, our dogs (duh, why wouldn’t I have hundreds of photos of Malcolm and Ollie on my phone?). We have been in our place for two whole weeks and we’re still unpacking boxes and attempting to de-clutter and organize our lives. When you’re used to living out of suitcases (well, quite a few suitcases), a lot of “stuff” becomes your own personal hell. We’ve donated tables, bar stools, electronics, and bags of clothes to the Salvation Army, so the next step is clearly a bonfire in the back yard. Desperate times call for desperate measures — plus, I’ve always loved the smell of burning. But not burning plastic or hair; that’s just gross.

So homeowners — how do you do it? Tips? PLEASE GIVE ME SOME TIPS!

I don’t know what to tell you about the homeowner thing, but can I just say your doggies are the CUTEST!

Seeing this pictures makes me miss my dogs, and Starbucks, I really miss Starbucks!

Awwww. I would miss my dogs so much if I was away from them! And yeah… I miss the cafes in Scotland but Starbucks is always nice. Especially their cafe mochas. ;)

I’m loving the new look over here, Rachel! It’s gorgeous.

On the home owners front, I have no idea how to keep an uncluttered house. My place is a constant mess of dog stuff, clothes and way too many gadgets. I might learn one day though!

      Thank you!

And yes, ours is too! I’m just trying to make myself let go of things we don’t need!

Good luck with the unpacking and organizing!

It’s very nice of you to donate the things that you do not need! ^_^
I’ve moved quite a few times in my life, so when my family decided to stay in one place we just took it one step at a time and really enjoyed the process. We especially took our time when it came to decorating our home because we wanted it to be perfect for us! So, once you get the essential things you need, take it easy for everything else. I think it took us two full years to finally feel like we are completely unpacked, but now everything is perfect! ^_^

I need to learn to take things one step at a time because right now, I want everything done now! Haha. And yes, I love donating! I have a feeling we’ll be bringing more to the Salvation Army.

ahhh the puppies! I have been in my house for 3 years and I declutter alll the time, it’s a never ending game, BUT being a homeowner is SO fun! :)

Yeah, I have a feeling this will be an ongoing project. :) We’ll probably be de-culttering years from now. Oh joy!!

I thought our 1500 sf house in New York was small, but we lost 500 of those square feet when we moved to Hawaii. Just about everything possible went to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or got sold on Craig’s List. So far, the small spaces tips and tricks on Apartment Therapy and the organizers (under the bed storage, drawer organizers, closet storage systems, etc.) sold by The Container Store have been the most help, but we’re also working on just plain getting rid of things. My husband and I actually made a resolution to get rid of one thing each day, big or small, from a furniture piece that’s not being used to an extra pen or knickknack that just collects dust. So far, so good!

I definitely need to check out Apartment Therapy and tips on Pinterest. I just need an easy way to organize closets…. and our kitchen. I feel like we have so much stuff!!

My husband bought a house about 2 years ago. I’m the type of person who wants everything perfect and done right away. Our house was move in ready, but I wanted to change the paint and decorate it to make it home. Learning to take it day by day and even year by year to make changes really helped!
I’m obsessed with Essie polish and I love your dogs!

That’s exactly how I am! We started painting and trying to hang decorations on the walls right away and now we’re burnt out. Organizing all of our junk is the hardest part. I feel like it’s never going to end!

Definitely need some tips as well. So much easier living with my one backpack of belongings. Although, even with a maximum weight of 25kg, the weight of my backpack (+little bag) mysteriously went up to 45kg in 13 months… had to carry 20kg to the local secondhand shop and – unfortunately – the bin, before I took my flight home… ;-)

Isn’t it funny how you seem to accumulate stuff over the months? That ALWAYS happens to us and now that all of our belongings are finally in one spot, we’re officially overwhelmed. Ha.

  • Fran

Spring cleaning will be your best friend – different situation but my husband and I have grown so accustomed to moving and the cleaning out of clutter that comes with that when we don’t move we become overwhelmed with the amount of stuff we accumulate. So every few months we just go through and donate stuff like it’s our job haha
