fresh start

fresh start

Isn’t it funny how something as small as a new design can give you a fresh start and a new perspective when it comes to blogging? My friend Amanda was kind enough to overhaul my entire website for spring and I can’t think of one thing I’d change. That’s surprising because I can be a big pain in the ass when it comes to the elements I want in a design. She’ll also be creating my new photography website in the near future and I’m sure it will be just as stellar. Amanda is a joy to work with and I highly recommend her if you’re looking for a fresh start like me. She’s sort of a genius when it comes to coding and isn’t afraid to work with her clients until everything is perfect.

But back to fresh starts…

Settling down after three years of moving feels like a fresh start, too. My husband has been wonderful with helping me set up my photography business is this area, we’ve enjoyed picking out furniture that compliments both of our tastes, and now we’re planning fun spring projects like planting a garden in the back yard. Ahhh. Feeling content and settled is nice. And we’ll feel even more settled once we’ve finished unpacking the rest of these boxes. And take it from me — if you’re life is feeling chaotic and disorganized, donate the belongings you’re not using. Having somewhat bare areas in the house has made me feel so much calmer. And it doesn’t hurt that we now have a ginormous soaker tub I’ve been frequenting almost every day.

What do you do when you need a fresh start and new perspective on life? (and of course, blogging) I’d love for you to share your thoughts below!

I’m loving your new design! :)
I completely agree on donating the extra stuff. I tried to donate extras before we packed, and as we’ve been unpacking I’m trying to donate and throw away as necessary so that I don’t put it in a place somewhere and keep it without using it for the next 5 years. Haha! Enjoy the tub!

      Thank you, Madi!

Ha, exactly. I have to throw stuff into the donate pile right away before Brandon talks me into keeping it. ;) Hopefully you’re settling into your new place!!!

I love the new design Rachel! I bet it feels like a breath of fresh air :) I can’t wait to redesign my site when I settle back home after my travels – I’m too nervous to alter anything at the point as I’m working only on a tablet! I hope you are enjoying being settled! Planting a garden is high on my to do list when I get back to Aus!

Thank you so much, Carly! I love the colors. :)

I can’t wait to see your re-design when that time comes! It’s always fun getting a new look.

When I need a fresh start I like to clean and organize. It always makes me feel better and ready to move on to the next project.

That’s exactly what I’m trying to do now! A little spring cleaning. :)

I’m also on a purge kick right now. I’ve been hauling the same furniture around the world for the past eight years now, and the military movers have nearly destroyed it all. I’m slowly swapping out items here and there, but I’m ready to just scrap it all and start fresh. I always feel so much lighter when I get rid of stuff I no longer want or need.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Gahh, I hate when movers destroy furniture! We’ve had that happen a couple of times. But like you said, it’s a good excuse to purge and start new!

I love it! The colors and the header look great. I just redesigned my blog today, although all that meant for me was picking a a different free WordPress theme and customizing it. Still, it makes a difference!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

      Thank you!!

If I knew how to customize code myself I would totally do that! I just don’t trust myself at all. Haha. ;)

The new design is gorgeous! And how wonderful that it’s adding to your content-ness. I’m looking forward to seeing your photography business grow!

For me, a fresh start can begin with a simple house cleaning. If I’m in the right mindset, the process tends to be therapeutic and I always feel better afterwards, having created space for more creativity.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Thank you, Danielle! I hope my business does well in this area. We shall see. :)

And yes, cleaning the house is my favorite way to start anew. I’m trying to do that now but we have so much stuff out of place still because of our move!!

  • http://sophieinclogs.wordpress.com/ Sophie

Beautiful design, definitely getting me in the springtime mood!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Thanks, Sophie! I’m in love with the springtime colors! Although I believe we’re supposed to get snow again sometime soon… I’m so over it!

  • http://danceanthak.blogspot.com Erinn C. D.

I know the last design process you went through was a bit of a debacle so I’m glad to see the fresh start :). Sometimes you just have to completely redo everything to get back to being yourself.

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Hahaha, YES it was! And that’s exactly why I wanted to get rid of my old blog design. I just felt like so many bad blogging memories were attached to it. :)

  • http://straightupzblog.com/ Z K

Love the new design!!! And I totally agree about the fresh starts – my new design made me feel sooooo much more at home with my whole site and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet (a feat in and of itself)! So glad you guys are loving your new home. :]]]

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Thank you, dear! I love the springtime colors she used! And yes, completely agree that a redesign can do so much when it comes to blogging. I LOVE yours!!!!!

  • http://likeordinarylife.com/ Tina Byland

I love your new fresh starts- the house and the blog! I love the blog design, seriously. It’s one of my favorite redesigns. It’s just so clean and, well, FRESH! It’s amazing what a fresh start can do for your perspective and mood. And I really think your blog redesign exudes freshness. :)

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Yay, thank you!! I’m in love with the colors and the simplicity! And I definitely want to blog more because of it. Hey, I’m even responding to comment! ;) But really, I haven’t done that in a while, sadly. Sometimes you just get sick of blogging, ya know?

  • http://theannabelleblog.com/ Anna Belle

I love the design, she did an excellent job! When I need a fresh start in my blogging I brainstorm a new column idea that excites me and I run with it!

  • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

so pretty! and that picture is just great as well!!! how do you like WordPress?!?!

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

I really like it! I feel like there’s a lot more freedom and I don’t have to worry about Blogger/Google deciding to shut down my blog. Are you thinking about switching? If so, make sure you hire someone knowledgeable. That was my biggest problem because my site was completely messed up for a while and it was a big headache.

      • http://www.oakandoats.com/ Elizabeth Mayberry

Rachel, Good advice! I have toyed around with the idea but never fully committed to the switch just yet!

Since I’ve gotten back to the States and am staying at my mom’s house, I’ve been soaking in her ginormous tub everyday too! I knew I missed big ass tubs when I lived in France, but I didn’t realize just how much :)

    • http://www.postcardsfromrachel.com/ Postcards from Rachel

Aren’t they the best?! Brandon keeps joking that our water bill is going to be insane! Probably…. ;)

Going through my stuff and purging and organizing always helps me. Stuff can overwhelm me but it’s so easy to accumulate. I always feel lighter and inspired when I have a clean and functional workspace without clutter.
