a nuclear bunker in prague

Whenever I look at these photographs I can’t help but laugh because they’re so random. Brandon begged me to take a tour of a nuclear bunker in Prague and I obviously obliged. Hanging out in a smelly bunker complete with fun graffiti and stuff to mess with? Sign me up!

The tour we found was a Communism and nuclear bunker tour so we started in the city and our guide walked us around. Then we hopped on public transportation and made our way to the bunker — part of it had been transformed into a bar. I’m not kidding.

This 1950’s bunker was around four floors deep and extremely creepy. The doors and walls were thick and it almost felt like we would disappear underground forever. The guide showed us gas masks, atomic suits, and different weapons. I got to hold a grenade and a gun but my husband won’t allow me to post the photo in a blog post. I guess he wants me to be able to get a job after this housewife stint.

This blast map showed the center of impact and the nuclear fallout that would result after an attack. It would be terrifying to constantly worry about a nuclear attack while trying to live your life.

So, tell me. Would you traipse around a nuclear bunker?

This is really cool… but what is with the brooms?! Did they think they were going to just brush the radiation off?!

The way they use the mannequins cracks me up! We lived in Prague for 9 years and I never knew a bunker tour existed! If that’s where I think it is (in Žižkov, Prague 3) I never even knew it was a bar! I lived just down the hill from there!

This is very interesting! Thanks for sharing the photos. :)

I would definitely go! I’m a total nerd when it comes to historical things and places, I think the creepiness just adds to the experience.

It definitely does! I’m not positive, but I think our guide said they could have fit 5,000 people in the bunker. Eek.

sigh. Well I GUESS I’ll comment. haha.

This is cool. But really really creepy!

Woah, that’s an interesting tour for sure! But creepy… not sure I’d be up for it!

The worst part was knowing you were so far down! Four stories below the surface…

So cool! I went into a WWII bunker when I went to Wales. It was underneath/sort of in the walls of a castle, and it was probably one of the more awesome things I’ve ever done. There were no mannequins, but they DID play recordings of what it would’ve sounded like down there during a raid. My friends and I weren’t on a tour, so when we were down there it was just the three of us, alone, in a dark tunnel… and we may or may not have jumped into each others’ arms in terror when the bomb alarm went off. :P

Ha, I would have jumped too! We went to a museum in London and they played bombing recordings… so scary.

What a great trip! I’ve been in the nuclear bunker that’s open in Scotland (although I forget just exactly where it is) – that one is huge and kinda scary when you see just how thick the doors to close the outside nuclear world are. Also there’s a couple of nuclear look out bunkers splattered around the UK, use to live near one although I never visited in myself I’ve seen pictures and it looks tiny!

So amazing! It really does seem like a different era/world but so interestng to have visitied!

Just thinking about being down underground gives me an upset tummy!

Wow, that would have been incredible to see! I’m the type of person who has to SEE history to fully appreciate it. Books, documentaries and photos are one thing, but to experience it in person is another!

I like the idea of visiting one, but I’m not sure my claustrophobia would allow me to enjoy it.

Gosh, that sounds amazing! I love the modern graffiti, too. I’m with Ech in that I like the idea but I probably wouldn’t be able to handle it. Kudos to you :)

Hahaha, okay, I could totally see the hubs and I doing something like this. I don’t think I have ever been in a bunker before!

This sounds awesome! I love these prague flashbacks. I also love how everything in prague seems to be covered in beautiful graffiti…
