dublin, ireland | tours and sightseeing

After a quick but somewhat terrifying flight from Aberdeen (damn you, Ryanair), we arrived in beautiful Dublin, Ireland. While we were there we visited Trinity College, Dublin Castle, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral and the Guinness Storehouse. We also had a fun time walking around the Temple Bar District because there were pubs and drunks everywhere. If you’re not into drinking there are cafes, interesting stores, and musicians on the corners… plus the people-watching is worth a visit.

When our pub tour ended (after we had enjoyed our pints of Guinness at the top of the storehouse… bliss), we switched gears and took a city ghost tour. It was almost as terrifying as our Ryanair flight because it took place in the dark and the guide led us through churches and ruins all over the city. Plus three teenage girls in our group wouldn’t stop screaming. It was one of those things we thought might be cheesy and boring, but honestly, we still talk about our ghost tour because it was that much fun. Everyone should schedule a ghost tour while vacationing in Ireland!

Other than that, we enjoyed the architecture and gorgeous landscape. Look at that green grass!

While we were in Ireland, we stayed in the city and walked everywhere. Next time we plan a vacation we’ll be sure to rent a car and visit Blarney Castle and the Cliffs of Moher. I have a feeling that driving in Ireland will be similar to the experiences we had in Scotland’s countryside and I miss that!

Have you ever been to Dublin, Ireland?

Thank you for sharing! I am working on planning our trip to Europe and we will be spending about 3 days in Ireland! We were trying to find a good castle. Did you like Dublin Castle? I might have to add the city ghost tour to our list;) I am so excited to see the countryside of Ireland! Do you think renting a car would be the best way?

(Although I still can’t stomach Guinness!)

We actually took our car over on the ferry from Holyhead for a week and skipped Dublin. We figured we could always go back, since Leeds-Dublin was an easy and cheap RyanAir flight, but then we never got around to it… and time ran out.
But we drove all over the Rep. of Ireland (didn’t go into Northern Ireland)- we headed west towards Galway, stopping along the way for sites, then down towards Clonmel and that area, then did Dingle Peninsula and the Ring of Kerry, then Waterford, then back up to Dublin for our ferry home. We laughed, since some friends of mine from America had just gone to Ireland earlier and warned us about the narrow roads- but after having lived and driven in Yorkshire for a couple of years and having driven quite a bit in the Highlands, the Irish roads weren’t anything new!!
Blarney Castle was surprisingly well-done, though, actually better done than almost any other sites we saw there. Kilkenny Castle is gorgeous, and Kylemore Abbey in Connemara is just surreally beautiful. Dingle Peninsula is fantastic, and Waterford is a great town- and the factory tour is actually pretty amazing!

Now I’m extra wanting to get back and see Dublin, though. I will someday… also, I love ghost tours- was yours good or just cheesy-fun?

I think we were there at the same time! I ran the Dublin half marathon on the 5th! It was a quick girls’ weekend, so I’d love to go back with the family and venture out west to the cliffs and surrounding area. Wrote about the half here: http://www.mylifeinverbs.com/2013/08/half-marathon-in-dublin-ireland.html

We had a great time as well! Can’t wait to go back.

You make Dublin look really appealing! We spent a couple of weeks driving around Ireland a few years ago, our boat arrived in Dublin but we skipped the city because I had read bad things about it. Now I’m thinking we should have taken a look!

And yes, if you go back.. the countryside is a must! It’s very similar to New Zealand in my opinion, beautiful. Cliffs of Moher are stunning, Blarney castle is fun (and kinda gross, kissing the stone) but the best bit – the northern causeway coast!

I live in the north of Ireland in county Down and I’ve been to Dublin quite a few times. I love it! The drive down used to take a lot longer before the motorway but it had such a better view. Driving through Ireland is gorgeous no matter where you’re going I think :) Glad you had a good time!

Beautiful although I’m totally biased because I was born and raised in Dublin. I lived there for 26 years and I’ve only just recently moved to South Carolina – I know massive change right!! These photos make me a little homesick!
