athens, greece sightseeing

Today I want to share some of my favorite photos from our trip to Greece! We traveled during a yearly demonstration against Americans, and luckily we didn’t have any issues. We just stayed in the hotel room the first night while locals were lighting stuff on fire. Lots of riots. Anyway…

On this particular trip we visited the Parthenon, Temple of Zeus and Panathenaic Stadium. Oh, and we got lost on a few roofs and some old lady forced Brandon to carry her groceries. Exploring is fun!

The Parthenon is a temple situated on the Acropolis, a flat-topped rock in the middle of Athens. We made the trip when it was warmer so the entire area was jam-packed with tourists, but the short hike to the top was unlike anything I have ever experienced before. The view from the Acropolis was well worth having to deal with the crowds; you could see the entire city.

We had difficulty finding Panathenaic Stadium because it was tucked away near a park in Athens. But as soon as we spotted it and stepped inside, we noticed that the entire structure was made of beautiful white marble. The stadium was the site of the first modern Olympic games in 1896.

Have you ever been to Athens? If so, what was your favorite part?

We must get back to Athens. We only had a few hours there so were only able to view the Acropolis from below but I must check it out up close!

We spent 4 days in Athens and it wasn’t NEARLY enough! The history, the food, the really sweet stray dogs…

When we went to the Panathenaic Stadium there was an elementary school having a field-day sort of event. I couldn’t imagine having something so regular in such an important location!

I went to Greece in 2008. These pictures bring me right back! Isn’t is gorgeous? I only wish I had had my DSLR at that point instead of my point and shoot, but I didn’t get my nice camera until a few years later. I would love to go back.

I loved exploring Athens. It was fantastic. I also happened to be there while it was Greek history weekend or some kind of special weekend so the Acropolis was free to enter. My favourite part was all the street vendors selling fresh coconut and warm chestnuts.

Sadly, I have never been to Greece (only stopped off at Athen’s airport on my way to Egypt). I have read much about it though (ancient history nerd here)!

This is bringing back such great memories for me! I visited Athens and Santorini when I studied abroad in Spain in 2010 and had such a fantastic time there – I’m dying to get back. It would be tough to pick just one of my favorite parts of my visit – loved it all!

Athens is such a beautiful place to travel too … apart from those small doorways what is with that! I remember staying at a hotel and drinking on the rooftop by the pool into the wee hours of the night. Lots of fun :)

Was this before or after his man boob implant? ;)

Wow!!! Just like you like pictures from Asia, I love pictures from Europe because I’ve never been! These pictures are gorgeous and make me want to go even more. I never really cared for history classes in school, but after traveling, I’m so into learning about the history of new places and I bet seeing such old buildings in Greece is really something else!

  • Lisette

I feel like such a nerd for knowing that your beer glasses said “ALPHA” in Greek. Ok, I’m gonna go hide now.

This brings back memories! We spent a couple of weeks in Greece with my sisters and kids a few years ago and LOVED it. Athens reminded me a lot of India (strangely, could’ve had something to do with the dodgy district we stayed in!) – I did love the parthenon though, and the ruins at the bottom of the hill which I can’t remember the name of (had great museums though). Fun times!

Wow I am, like, green with envy over here. I’ve always wanted to visit Greece. I had an obsession with Greek mythology as a child, so seeing these pictures just made me jaw drop. I love it!!
Also, how tall is your husband? Those doors are tiny!!! Did you notice a difference in the height of those from Greece?

  • Elle-Living in Color

This is absolutely gorgeous!! I would give anything to see Europe- as I’ve never been before :) thanks for letting me live vicariously through you adventures!
